BOOM Blocks
“Our project is a nostalgic nod to the art of quilt-making and a light-hearted tribute to the iconic boombox radio that has been a source of musical joy throughout the ages. We celebrate the profound influence of art and music in shaping our colorful world and the way we navigate through life. Music transcends boundaries of age and culture, serving as a universal language that connects us all and forms the fabric of our shared experiences.
In our project, we merge the art of quilt-making with the rhythm and vibrancy of music, creating a visual symphony of color and texture. By upcycling discarded fabrics and scraps, we not only honor the principles of sustainability but also pay homage to the interconnectedness of all things. Through the mindful act of hand-sewing and quilting, the artists develop valuable skills while symbolically connecting threads of friendship and community.” - Melissa Falco Williams, Director of Fiber Arts

And the Band Played On
“Music is the theme for this year’s 2024 Annual Art Show. “And the Band Played On” is a mixed medium collage project on paper using cut shapes of colored paper and glue as the background with a black silhouette drawing of a musician playing a different musical instrument in the front of the artwork. Each artist cut their own colored shapes of paper for the collage which makes each collage unique. Picking a different musical instrument was exciting for the artists because they all love music.” - Edmound Veyna, Fine Arts Instructor

Drumming my heart away is for all audiences; kids, teens and adults. People from all around. No matter if you’re a young teenager or an adult; regardless of your race, religion, culture or just whatever. No violence, mean stuff or inappropriate. Not too loud or just the right volume for dancing, singing or socializing with family, friends, neighbors and the community all around.

Warped Records
“A quirky spin on making a vinyl record, ‘Warped Records’ is a fiber arts project involving weaving and fabric collage processes to design a record label. Artists envisioned creating their own bands and music genres using brainstorming, collaboration, humor, and play on words.
The project was inspired by the culture of exploring new music while working in the art studio at L.A. GOAL. Artists combined categories such as Country, Rock, Pop, Reggae, Swing, African music, and Jazz to invent their own sound. They then designed and illustrated a record label that depicted imaginative music. These whacky, warped shaped records jump off the walls in vibrant frequencies and tones that have never been seen or heard before.” - Melissa Falco Williams, Director of Fiber Arts & Jeff Hansen, Fiber Arts Instructor

Yarn Painting
“Huichol art broadly groups the most traditional and most recent innovations in the folk art and handicrafts produced by the Huichol people, who live in the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas and Nayarit in Mexico. The unifying factor of the work is the colorful decoration using symbols and designs which date back centuries.
The L.A. GOAL Artists learned how to paint with yarn and create their own artistic designs By researching images and technique, each artist was inspired to create their very own scene based on dreams, unique landscapes and animals.” - Jeff Hansen, Fiber Arts Instructor & Amoura Gonzalez, Fine Arts Instructor

This year, the Emerging Art Class creates stunning mixed-media pillowcases, combining painting and embroidery. Each piece—whether depicting animals, flowers, or self-portraits—reflects the artist’s personal vision and connection to their chosen subject, resulting in unique and vibrant works of art.” - Blanca Martinez, Emerging Artist Instructor

Where Have All the Flowers Gone
“Inspired by the song, “Where have all the flowers gone” by Peter, Paul and Mary, Our artists designed frames inspired by decorative techniques using patterns of 19th century sources and created surreal natural portraits of different kinds of florals, such as trees, cacti and flowers.” - Amoura Gonzalez, Fine Arts Instructor

Ceramics
“The Wednesday ceramics class is exploring the vast history of music in many forms–drawing and painting musical instruments from the genres of classical, jazz, country, folk, rock and hip-hop on a range of bowls, vases and, of course, music-related treasure boxes and ceramic instruments. Referencing the days of vinyl records, once called “platters,” the artists are playing music moguls– designing platters and dishes that incorporate labels, song titles and recording artists of their own invention.” - David Keeps, Ceramics Instructor
